About Fran Whitaker and Hyggeable

Hey, I’m Fran Whitaker. I’m a writer, retired Paralympian, and someone who’s always trying to make life feel a little easier and a lot more comfortable. Hyggeable is where I collect all my favourite cosy ideas, the simple things that make a day feel better, and the kind of warm, lived-in moments that help you relax.

This site brings together the things that make everyday life feel nicer: cosy corners, small comforts, calmer routines, and those tiny details that improve my mood or the feeling of a room. I’m not here to preach perfect interiors or minimalist bliss. I’m more interested in the real stuff: the atmosphere, the feel of a space, the rituals you actually stick to, the comforts that make sense to you.

I didn’t grow up knowing anything about hygge. I just slowly built a life where ease and comfort mattered more than rushing and pressure. Hyggeable is the result of that shift. It is a place to explore what comfort can look like in your own home and your own rhythm.

These days, Hyggeable is my space for sharing ideas that make everyday life feel calmer and more grounded. Not because anyone says you should slow down, but because you can feel when it helps.

My Backstory (The Very Short Version)

I was born with cerebral palsy after a complicated start to life. I went on to break world records, represent Paralympics GB, and coach myself to every one of the 23 international medals I won.

Alongside all that, I was juggling school, burnout-level self-doubt, and the odd identity crisis. I left school with terrible grades, eventually applied to university on a whim, and somehow came out with a First Class degree, a Masters, and two honorary doctorates.

I’ve done some speaking, some adapting, some stumbling through life on instinct. Through all of it, what I’ve wanted – more than productivity, perfection, or polished routines is comfort and calm.

If you want my full backstory, you can find it here.

Why Hygge?

Here’s the honest version: I like things that make life feel a bit easier.

Some days that looks like a calmer room or a routine that doesn’t feel like work. Other days it’s a blanket, a snack, and the hope that tomorrow’s got better energy. Hygge fits both of these types of days: the good days, the chaotic ones, and everything in between. Because it’s about how life feels, not how it looks.

For me, hygge is about creating a home and rhythm that doesn’t drain you. A day that has a few moments you actually enjoy. A bit of space to breathe without needing a full life overhaul.

A Few Other Things That Might Explain Me

  • I coached myself to all my international medals
  • I collect books like they’re a personal economy
  • I’m allergic to matching socks and chlorine
  • I build huge, interconnected projects for fun
  • Most of my ideas start with, “OK but hear me out…”
  • I can’t sit normally in a chair to save my life
  • I’m always reorganising something to try and make it nicer.
